From my experience, the easiest way to start a meditation is to sit and focus on your breathing. My advice for a beginner meditator is to sit or lay down before spending a minute focusing on what you can hear, and then focusing on your breath.
A meditation space is going to support you in your practice. It’s the place you can go when you’re find and ground yourself daily or when you are feeling strong emotions. A corner of a room will do fine or even in your back garden.
Decorate your space by gathering your sacred items. Select one thing for each of the five senses :
Sight – Display a meaningful picture of a symbol, landscape, guru or saint that inspires you.
Smell – Incense or a candle that is infused with essential oil works well
Sound – Find online peaceful meditation music, Tibetan singing bowl, or a recorded guided meditation.
Taste – Always a glass of water from a flask is preferred. Tea or infused water can bring warmth to your experience.
Touch – Mala beads or crystals work well to help you focus during your meditation.
You can use a meditation pillow and blankets to create a sense of softness. Having a singing bowl, or beads in your practice will also contribute to the design of your space. .
Associate this area with stillness and special time for yourself or your family that is reserved to your practice.
